Sup ya’ll. See below a few ideas for things to do if you haven’t yet heading into this weekend:
1. MassQing The Soul - Workshop
If you haven’t yet gotten your ticket to “MassQing The Soul” my pair of MassQing workshops happening this Saturday May 3rd at the Essex Art Center, now is the time, and here is the link:
Through the workshop participants will learn the origins and technique of MassQing, then engage first hand in drafting and painting their own MassQ, transforming themselves into walking works of art. Join me for a fun, reflective, family-friendly art activity that will have you seeing yourself and others in a whole new way.
2. Check Out “Sinners” (in IMAX)
I usually don’t get caught up in the hype machine, but I’d been hearing a lot about this film so I went and saw it last week with my niece. If you know me, you know I’m… well… highly critical when it comes to films. And while this film isn’t perfect (what is perfect anyway?), I’d very much recommend it for its strengths. It does a lot of interesting things in terms of genre, social commentary, special FX and history/time without sacrificing its core storytelling. And it’s gorgeous. Def worth a watch.
If you see it, I’d highly recommend you check it out at an IMAX theatre, as it was shot on IMAX film cameras and was intended to be shown as such. I saw it at the South Bay Center 12 cinema. If you have no idea what IMAX is, or why you should care, the director breaks it down here in a masterclass of aspect ratios and film formats.
Final note: I kinda wish I hadn’t seen the trailer for this film before I saw it, I don’t think it captures the nuance of the film. So if you haven’t seen the trailer, I wouldn’t. Go see it with no expectations or context, more of risk but way more of a reward.
